Japan Wax

Japan wax is a vegetable fat derived from the berries of sumac tree or its neighboring species. Chemically it is not wax but fat. We, however, call it wax because of its moderate hardness and elasticity.Japan Wax is used in Japan since ancient times, and highly valued for making candles that are a vital tool of Shinto and Buddhist ceremonies. Many years ago it was used as a hair oil for traditional Japanese coiffures, and even today it is indispensable in dressing the topknots of Sumo wrestlers.Moderate hardness and elasticity are attributed to dibasic acids it contains such as japanic acid which are proper to Japan Wax.
