This remarkable cationic compound TAKANAL is finding increasingly more applications in various types of cosmetic preparations, particularly for the treatment of hair and scalp.  Since its discovery in Japan in 1954, this aminovinyl compound has been used in many successful hair care and scalp treatment preparations sold worldwide.
Chemically, TAKANAL is 6-[2-[(5-bromo-2pyridyl) amino] vinyl]-1-ethyl-2-picolinium iodide.  It is a cationic compound with the structure shown below.
TAKANAL has an excellent safety record and is approved for use in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations by Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare. The LD50 of this material is 369 mg/kg (mice, subcutaneous injection).

TAKANAL is surprisingly effective even at a very low concentration.  The normally recommended dosage is 0.002% for products such as hair tonic, hair cream, shampoo, hair conditioner or hair treatment products.  TAKANAL is compatible with protein, surfactants, polymers, glycols, alcohols and most of the ingredients used in cosmetics.  It is very versatile material and has been widely used not only in hair and scalp treatment products but also in other cosmetics designed to prevent itching and dandruff.
